World War II Memorial

One of the most popular films in the past year was one entitled “Saving Private Ryan”, which depicted the invasion of Europe in World War II by the allied forces. It also brought attention to the men and women who served in our armed forces during that time. Unknown to me (and quite a few others as well) was the fact that there is no memorial to those who served. But today’s FamSite visits a works in progress that will change that oversight.

Called the World War II Memorial, it is a site that is sponsored by the US House of Representatives. Here you can learn about the proposed memorial, its location and design. You can see the people who have contributed to making this project happen, and how you can participate and contribute as well. There is a short history of the memorial project, which was begun back in 1987.

A visit here is a chance to learn about the sacrifices that were made by our parents and grandparent’s generation. It will be truly fitting memorial once it is finished.
