Wishbone

Children’s programming for television has long been a staple for that industry. Starting with reruns of old western movies, advancing to animated programs up to the current offerings, programs that hold our children’s viewing span are varied. Some better than others, but as today’s FamSite shows, all can be both entertaining and educational.

The site is called Wishbone, and it is the online presence of one of the most popular dogs on television. This Public Broadcasting System’s program uses Wishbone to introduce children to reading and enjoying classic literature and to do it with quality and worthwhile programs. In each half-hour episode, Wishbone the dog’s escapades with the children and families of the fictional town of Oakdale, U.S.A., trigger a series of daydreams in which Wishbone the dog imagines himself as a character in signature scenes from classic works of literature. The modern-day scenes parallel the storylines from classic literature, emphasizing the timeless and universal themes explored in these classic tales. One time he will befriend Joan of Arc, the next he will be D’Atagnan, and even turn up as both the Prince and the Pauper. This site has listings of all the episodes, online activities, schedules, and background information on the program.

This is a wonderful site that introduces young children to not only the joy of reading, but the fun as well. Enjoy this site and be sure to pass it on to a friend.

When I was little, I used to watch things like Dragon Tales, Barney, and Arthur constantly on PBS, but nothing stood out more in my mind and made love to read than Wishbone. I used to read constantly the wishbone novels and watched an episode everyday. A long time ago, Wishbone was everywhere, on luchboxs, on bookbags, and a whole section of our local library was dedicated to the books. Now you'll be lucky if you find one or two episodes online, let alone the books in libraries. I see more and more people at school and on the street who talk like they don't know right from left, and most of them hate reading. Growing up with Wishbone made me appreciate reading, and learn to love it, and I just wish my peers had done the same. Do away with the mind numbing, repetitive shows like Dora the Explorer and Dinosaur Train (A program which just recently replaced Wishbone in my PBS station's time slot on Sunday, the ONLY time it ever came on, so now it never shows anymore). Bring back the one and only outlet where kids can see classic literature in an easy to understand format, while still keeping intact the worth and value of the piece. Thank you for not dumbing everything down, Wishbone, thank you for helping me to love reading! (and getting me to love dogs!) Also, one of the above posters mentioned the Phantom of the Opera episode, Pantin' at the Opera, and, as an avid phan, I would really love to see this episode, as this was one of the few I didn't see. If anyone knows where to find it, email me! Direct streaming only please, or on video.

My siblings and I all watched Wishbone as kids and still have a soft spot for the "little dog with a big imagination" and all his literary adventures. He's the reason I originally became interested in Shakespeare as well as many of the other classic authors. I too have been waiting years for the show to be released on season boxset but to no avail. I recently discovered that HitEntertainment owns the rights to the show right now and if they are able to get enough interest for the show, there will be a higher chance of it getting released. For anyone who would like to see DVDs for all the episodes, please consider sending an email to: [email removed] and letting them know how much you enjoy the show and would love to see it made easily available for everybody.

Please please please make a DVD set of all of the Wishbone episodes! I used to watch Wishbone all of the time as a child and I honestly believe that it is Wishbone that has created my love of literature. I know so many people who would purchase the DVD if it was a set of all of Wishbone's episodes! :)

I have 47 episodes of Wishbone on DVD that I'm selling for $50 shipped. Only missing one episode. If anyone is interested e-mail me at [email removed]

Wishbone was and is one of my all time Favorite shows on TV period, The world could do itself a favor and put the wholesome shows back on TV. Children mimic what they see and I would rather my child see Wishbone, Little Bear, Kipper, Spot and other Older shows instead of Bart Simpson or this family Guy, Witches and other things that have become common place in today's every day world. I don't get cable because of all the trash on it, Havent had it in 5 years. Only wish I could get PBS without the other channels. God bless all of you and Merry Christmas

As I'm going through my old VHS collection I found that I still had most of the Wishbone episodes that we loved as a family back in the 90s. Now my youngest child is at an age to appreciate it and I can't find the DVD's, VHS, or any other video of Wishbone available anywhere. I'm glad I have the tapes that I have but I would be happy to purchase the entire series on DVD if it were available!

I wish Wishbone would be aired on PBS once again, or at least released to DVD. I am seventeen years old and I can remember Wishbone being my favorite TV show from '95 to '01. As the older sister to my four (soon to be five) siblings ranging in age from 1 to 11, I would love for them to know Wishbone as I did.
  11. Tori says:
Wishbone ws definetly my favorite show as a kid. (even before I knew how to read I was book obsessed) Recently, I've become a fan (or phan) of Phantom of the Opera. I remember vividly watching an episode with Wishbone as Raoul de Chagny along side a particularly frightening Erik (the Phantom). I won't usually give a second look to things that portray Erik as a monster but since this was such a dominating force in my childhood I was hoping someone would know where I could find this episode. I believe it's called Pantin' At The Opera.

As an educator, I found it increasingly harder to get kids interested in the classic stories. Wishbone allowed kids to get an overview of these stories with a cute little dog as the main character. I would love to see Wishbone back on PBS, and I would also like a complete collection for myself on DVD. Please, for the sake of the kids, put Wishbone back on.
  16. Sherrie says:
I recently introduced a classic literature unit to my fourth grade class using a Wishbone video. The class was mesmerized and pleaded for more. I'm certain that a re=release of the Wishbone series would be well-received by the typical intermediate level student and many former fans judging by the other posts on this site. Every school library needs an affordable complete collection of all episodes! It would also be a great PR tool to encourage donations during the next public television fundraiser!
  17. Meg says:
Please Please put wishbone back on PBS. I live in a house with 4 channels, and PBS or now MPBN, is the only half kids channel. My cousin and I loved the show, and we miss it so much. Now I am trying to find all the dvd's of the series, so I can watch it all the time. Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please Please put it back on. Thank you.
  18. Rhonda says:
I hear a rumor that Wishbone will be "coming soon" to our PBS station (unc-tv). I hope this is the case, as our whole family enjoyed and missed the series. We would buy them if they were available on DVD.
  19. sandra says:
Please put wishbone back on the air..It was one of the best shows provided for children and included educational themes as well

  21. Jolene says:
I am a 19 year old college student, and ever since I can remember I have loved to read. It wasnt until Wishbone aired though that my reading selection expanded beyond that which was provided to me in the classrooms. Wishbone inspired me to read a children's version of Huckleberry Finn when I was in 3rd grade, this was but one of the many stories that Wishbone inspired me to read. I was highly disappointed to see Wishbone go off the air, as it had truely made an impact upon me. It has been through my own observations that many adults have not read many of the classics pieces of literature that I had read by the age of 13. This was all in due part to a small dog that connected to such a huge audience in a very unique way. I can only hope that a box set of the Wishbone seasons on DVD is released. That way, when I have children, I can introduce them to the wonderful world of Wishbone, and hopefully inspire another generation of literature lovers.
  22. Anthony says:
I love wishbone and im 20 years old.....i wish my newborn family could enjoy him.
  23. Gayle says:
In elementary school, I always loved to watch my Wishbone. I'd always go home, grab a snack, and sit down, waiting for my show to come on. By 3rd grade, I knew all I needed to know about classics. In 2nd grade I tried reading Romeo and Juliet and the Count of Monte Cristo. Now in high school, I can relate to a Wishbone episode almost everyday in my English classes. My teachers laugh at me, but the show really helped. I always say, "Everything I need to know about literary classics, I learned from Wishbone." I whole heartedly agree that the series should be put on DVDs and aired again. If it was put on air, within a year, the series would sell with tremendous ease.
  24. Rachel Brock says:
Please put wishbone back on the TV. My cousin used to watch it and loved it and now I still love it and want to share it with my kids. Please let me know where I could buy all the DVD's of Wishbone that were ever put out.Thank U!

I truly think that every child should experience wishbone. It is an inspirational show and teaches a bit of history to children. What could be better than that. PLEASE put Wish Bone back on.
  27. Angie says:
I loved Wishbone when I was little, and would always wait for hours by the tv so my brother wouldn't try to turn the channel so I could watch him everyday. I wish to death he was back on tv! I love dogs and would really love to see him again.
  28. Michelle says:
I have just printed out a letter to Lyrick Studios requesting that they bring Wishbone back either to televison or to a full DVD series. I also have emailed my public television station and requested that they air it again for this generation of kids. I hope that you all will take this a bit farther and write to Lyric Studios and make the request too. Here is their address: Lyric Studios 830 South Greenville Avenue Allen, TX 75002

My husband, children and I are huge fans and former followers of the Wishbone series. Can we purchase the episodes that aired on PBS? Whether or not we can, why does'nt PBS bring the series back to life and if you need a time slot, take away that wretched Barney or Arthur for that matter. They both have deteriorated over time. Wishbone, on the other hand, is classic literature rolled up in a darling, daring pooch. How can anyone resist? Pretty please!!!!

  32. Rachel says:
I love Wishbone! I only saw a few of the shows, but every one was great! I love the books. The show should definitely be put back on air. Why not? I also agree that they should be in a DVD box set or something. JRTs and reading are two of my favorite things, so Wishbone is, in my eyes, perfect. Wishbone rocks!
  33. Wayne says:
Wishbone is definately the best show of the centuary. (or 1 of them) I would be delighted if a box set of dvd episodes would be released, but bringing the show back would be even better!!
  34. Jessica says:
I'm going to reiterate what everyone seems to be interested in- a DVD collection of all the Wishbone episodes! Wishbone taught me more than any other show I watched as a kid and I would love to share it with my little cousins!
  35. Rachael says:
If you won't bring Wishbone back (although that would be GREAT!), please make a box set of all the episodes so we can have our Wishbone!

  38. Angele says:
Wishbone!! How I miss thee! It HAS to be aired again -- I'm in college now and my love of literature is in great part due to that show. If it can't be aired on TV again (which it should be!), please release complete season DVDs!!!
  39. Graca says:
If Wishbone cannot return to the airwaves, please release a DVD set (individual episodes are too pricy and confusing).

My 23 yr old son loved the wishbone series when he was a young boy. I enjoyed watching it with him myself. I now have an 8 yr old son who has discovered the wishbone books. He loves them!!! Please, please, please air the series again. Thanks!
  41. Julie says:
I love the little dog and the wishbone series. I wish it would come back. Infact When I was a little girl, I disliked reading and thought that books were uncool. Then I saw this show and loved the little dog and started to read the books he showed. I loved the books, and would like to thank PBS for putting the show on I just wish it was back on. Hopefully, they will sell the DVD's soon. Thanks wishbone and thanks joe, sam and the entire group of people which made the show.
  42. CANDEE says:

  43. kelly Splawn says:
Please put Wishbone back on PBS. It is one of the better shows that you have to offer to children. Thank you.
  44. julie says:
Wishbone is probably the best tv show for children from the ages of 2 - whatever. I am an adult and enjoyed the series, that I purchased all of the VHS and even collected some of the Wishbone stuffed animals dressed in his costume. I am now a grandmother of a little girl and boy and I am introducing Wishbone to them. I so do wish that you would either remake the series or start a new one with out little friend. Thank you
  45. JESS says:
I wanted to know if you would put wishbone back on pbs because I'm sure everybobd liked the show like the kids who have no cable. THANK YOU
