Children’s programming for television has long been a staple for that industry. Starting with reruns of old western movies, advancing to animated programs up to the current offerings, programs that hold our children’s viewing span are varied. Some better than others, but as today’s FamSite shows, all can be both entertaining and educational.
The site is called Wishbone, and it is the online presence of one of the most popular dogs on television. This Public Broadcasting System’s program uses Wishbone to introduce children to reading and enjoying classic literature and to do it with quality and worthwhile programs. In each half-hour episode, Wishbone the dog’s escapades with the children and families of the fictional town of Oakdale, U.S.A., trigger a series of daydreams in which Wishbone the dog imagines himself as a character in signature scenes from classic works of literature. The modern-day scenes parallel the storylines from classic literature, emphasizing the timeless and universal themes explored in these classic tales. One time he will befriend Joan of Arc, the next he will be D’Atagnan, and even turn up as both the Prince and the Pauper. This site has listings of all the episodes, online activities, schedules, and background information on the program.
This is a wonderful site that introduces young children to not only the joy of reading, but the fun as well. Enjoy this site and be sure to pass it on to a friend.
