What’s Going On with Anthony Weiner, Arnold Schwarzenegger and John Edwards?

Power, wealth, fame, surrounded by people who tell you have great you are – these are things many of the most powerful people in our country have at their disposal all the time.
This power, et al, can lead to very bad things, like what we’ve heard has happened to New York Representative Anthony Weiner, former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the recently indicted former presidential candidate John Edwards, golf’s Tiger Woods and television’s Jesse James.
As more details come out regarding the most recent scandal with Weiner, it’s hard for many people to understand how you get to this point in your life, especially when you are a public figure and therefore, a more likely target for blackmail and scandal.
Sex expert and clinical psychologist Dr. Victoria Zdrok Wilson, author of a new book coming out this month called, “The 30-Day Sex Solution” (Adams Media, June 7, 2011, 256 pages, ISBN 978-1605506807) has some thoughts on if rampant adultery in the powerful can be prevented.
“In case of two-timing politicians, actors and athletes the answer is probably NO. These fields draw men with high testosterone who are sensation-seeking and narcissistic – all of which are correlated with higher numbers of sexual partners and lower propensity for monogamy, says Wilson.
“Once they reach status and power, they often feel a sense of narcissistic entitlement and tend to seek easy and immediate sexual gratification – the opportunity to fulfill which certainly abounds as legions of all too eager female fans flock to these rich, famous and powerful men. So remaining monogamous for a self-consumed megalomaniac is probably improbable at best.”
But not all men who cheat are rich, powerful and famous. An estimated 60% of married men will commit some sort of marital indiscretion. The cause? According to Wilson, “The pressures of dual careers and chronic lack of time leave many young couples little opportunity for regular intimacy and lack of intimate communication and unresolved relational issues lead to initial sexual estrangement and an affair becomes an emotional escape from the marital stressors for many people.”
Her suggestions for helping couples heal from infidelity or for helping couples prevent that from happening include:
- · Learning effective communication
- · Negotiating marital duties
- · Prioritizing intimacy
- · Scheduling playful time
- · Reconnecting with passion and romance
