USS Intrepid Air/Space Museum

It is summer, and you may be looking for something to do, or for something for you kids to, or for something for your parents to do with you (there, I think I got everyone covered). One thing that is fun to do is to visit a museum in your local area, and learn something about the history of the area where you live. Sometimes it isn’t practical to visit one in person, but that is where the internet can come to the rescue.

Today’s FamSite is one of the more famous museums in our country, called the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, and is located physically in New York City, and in cyberspace at the above link. This site tells something about the museum and it’s exhibits. It is located on the USS Intrepid, a former aircraft carrier that was on active duty for 31 years, beginning in World War II. But this carrier is more than just a look at an aircraft carrier. There are planes located here such as an A-12 Blackbird, the worlds fastest aircraft at 3.6 times the speed of sound, and planes stretching from WWII to Desert Storm. They are making preperation for the arrival of one of the Concorde Supersonic Airliners. There is also located next to the carrier is an actual submarine, the USS Growler, and a destroyer, the USS Edson. There is also a site of the week and other information about this site, including the educational department.

This is a great site for a summer visit. If you can get there in person, it will be an experience you won’t forget. If you can’t get there, this site is the next best thing. Enjoy your stop here
