Tweet Your Breakfast for Charity

Your mom always told you it’s the most important meal of the day. Breakfast is the fuel that gets your body going after a long night of sleep. It gives you energy and helps wake you up.
However, according to the Department of Agriculture, 25% of American households are “food-insecure” which means breakfast may not always be available. That’s over 27 million homes with kids who may not be eating breakfast (or other meals as well.)
“Breakfast is the first and most important meal. Not eating breakfast can be a real disadvantage for children in the classroom,” says Rob Bisceglie, Action for Healthy Kids Executive Director.
Children who eat breakfast:
- Have more energy to start their day.
- Get nutrients they might otherwise not get.
- Tend toward lower Body Mass Index (BMI) than other kids, according to the American Dietetic Association.
In an effort to help alleviate this growing problem, food manufacturer Kellogg is teaming up with Action for Healthy Kids to help feed kids who might otherwise have to go without breakfast.
“If more schools can offer breakfast to their students, we believe students will be better equipped to reach their potential both inside and outside the classroom,” says Doug VanDeVelde, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Innovation at Kellogg.
Here’s where your family comes in.
From now through July 31, 2011, you can do the following and Kellogg will make a donation to Action for Healthy Kids to help feed students in schools around the country.
- Upload a photo or description of your breakfast to www.shareyourbreakfast.com.
- Text your photo with the word “Share” to 21534. (Check your carrier for the charges associated.)
- Spread the word to friends and family through Facebook and on twitter using the hashtag #ShareUrBreakfast.
The goal is to provide 1 million meals by the start of the 2011-2012 school year. You can enter as many times as you want. Just one photo makes a difference in the life of a hungry child. Please check out www.shareyourbreakfast.com for more information.
