The Sushi FAQ
February 12, 2006 2 Comments
I LOVE sushi! I got introduced to it by a coworker in 2002, and I was instantly hooked! While I have tried every type of sushi I can find, I also know there’s a bunch that I haven’t. But every type I’ve tried I’ve loved!
Today’s FamilyFirst site celebrates sushi and sashimi. It’s called The Sushi FAQ. Here’s their mission:
“ Sushifaq.com is devoted to answering all your questions about sushi (and sashimi), its history, and the related Japanese dining experience. We aim to answer the simple questions such as ‘what is sushi?,’ “What is sashimi?,” “why would I eat raw fish?” and “How do I use chopsticks?” as well as enlighten diners as to the history, etiquette, terminology, and artistry that surround this simple and artful dining experience. Wondering how to prepare sushi? Find an answer here, along with all the basics. We have broken up our contents into a number of sections to better help you find what you need, and we are always open to comments or suggestions. If you have a sushi, sashimi or other food question, please ask and we would be happy to answer your question and put it on our website. So pour yourself a glass of sake, sit down and read on. We hope you find all that you are looking for here and that you remember us when you next have sushi!”
Good advice, if you like sake. That’s the one Japanese tradition that I haven’t developed a taste for.
To begin with, you might learn something about sushi etiquette. Is it polite to ask the chef questions? Yes, to my relief, as I often do so. Do you drink sake with sushi? No, only with sashimi (raw fish with no added rice). Maybe THAT’s why I never liked sake.
Also, learn why the squid you ordered has grooves cut in it. And if you really want to be adventurous, learn how to make sushi at home! I just finished a big lunch of homemade smoked salmon rolls that were delicious!
So enjoy today’s FamilyFirst site. And remember, gochisou-sama deshita!
