The Roseway

Once upon a time in our country, going to the movies was an event, an evening where one dressed up, had dinner out, and then attended a motion picture screening. In this age of multiplex cinemas and DVD players, that form of entertainment has changed. But today’s FamSite visits a theatre where the past has come alive.
The site is called The Roseway, a motion picture theatre in Portland Oregon. In continious operaton since 1925 when silent pictures were the mainstream of movies, it has survived wars, floods, and earthquakes to remain a neighborhood theatre. Here you can see what films are being shown, the times they are there, and, most enjoyably, take a digital tour of the theatre. The goal of the owners is to to bring back the intimacy and grandeur of the independent neighborhood theatre, wanting today’s customers to experience the magic of an era when theatre-goers were valued patrons. In this aspect they have triumphed.
So if you are ever in Portland, stop by this wonderful theatre. It is a time machine that would be worth the trip.
