History was made today.
More furniture was probably tossed and more obscenities likely blasted through the air in Steve Ballmer’s office.
A rumble took place in the very depth of the computing world, setting off seismographic alarms at expert blogs all over the web.
Google has announced Google Chrome.
Technically, Google Chrome is a web browser. but looking at the big picture, it’s a broadside attack at Windows.

Google Chrome (which is now available for download for Windows users) will alow you to run web-based applications from your desktop in a safe, secure area that will protect your operating system from malware.
Each web app is run in its own environment, independent from other tasks running in other Google Chrome tabs.
It’s coming for Linux and Mac soon.
This has to be crushing news to the Microsoft monopoly which is crumbling before our eyes. It is possible to run full-powered computer apps which are based on the web in the Google Chrome browser.

Free Online FavIcon Maker

I created a site a while back on a whim. You see, I’m a big John Grisham fan. I love the books, and more often than not, I love the movies too. So I created grishambooksandflicks.com, and opened the floor to those who would debate whether the book or movie was superior.
Anyhow, I’m hoping to someday make its great premise pay off with lots of attention from me. But in the meantime, it sits, with some content, but needing lots more.
But when I recently had a look at the site, I realized that it needed a favicon.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, a favicon is the little image that appears next to the website address in your web browser’s address bar. Whether you use Internet Explorer (please stop, for your own good), Firefox, Opera, or Safari, a little graphic will appear there when you visit the site, IF the webmaster is on top of his game.
Well, as I mentioned before, my Grisham site has been sadly neglected. I didn’t have a favicon. I wanted one.
So I popped into what I also selected as today’s FamilyFirst pick: FavIcon from Pics. Here’as how they work, in their own words:

Would you like to display your own icon on the browser address bar when visitors view or bookmark your web page? Now it’s easy to create icons for your web pages with FavIcon from Pics. Simply select a picture, logo or other graphic (of any size/resolution) for the “Source Image” and click “Generate FavIcon.ico”

Today’s FamilyFirst site may put you off with a popup. If you’re like me, running Firefox, the only thing you’ll notice is a little red X. But look beyond it. There is some very good content here.
The site is called Work at Home Ideas | Online Business Solutions. Now before you roll your eyes and move on to the next email, let me state that this isn’t some vacuum-headed shill trying to scam you. This is some very good advice that anyone looking to score some bucks at home using a web browser should take a little time to review. Here’s their mission:

We have thoroughly researched the Internet to locate the best home business ideas and opportunities that will enable you to start making money from your own home. All of the resources you will find here are safe, tested and proven.
What I liked about the site, and went to first, was the section on Scams: What to Avoid. While I think there are many scams that might have made the list (e.g. the old Nigerian need-an-American-bank-account get-rich-quick thing), they home in on just a couple. One’s an oldie-but-goodie (envelope stuffing), the other covers Ponzi schemes, which are very abundant and sound too good to be true.
On the other hand, they do cover some legitimate ideas for scoring a few bucks off the internet. Paid online surveys, smart eBay selling, and one I hadn’t heard of: web hosting referrals are mentioned (among others). This is stuff that works, and nobody gets scammed.
So if you’re looking to make some side money (I did NOT say get rich , today’s FamilyFirst site will be well worth a few minutes of your time.

Pagellan

The name of the site is Pagellan, a system that is designed to make online shopping easier. No longer do you need to remember the URL address of a site, or even type it in. Concerned about security, having all of these sites on one page. Pagellan doesn’t store any financial information, nor does it need to be installed on your computer. It’s main purpose is to provide a personal directory to your favorite merchants. They do not require any personal information other than a user’s name, country and Zip/Postal Code. This site is affilated with the program Got Zip, that was featured a few weeks ago. Using these two programs it is possible to earn commissions or get cash back on trackable purchase. It is very simple to start, all you need to do is enter the Members Area, and click on the “Setup Stores” link. You can enter up to 50 stores, choose a template, and the start saving.
This shopping portal makes online shopping very convenient. Anything that can be done to make it easier is a-okay in my books.

One of the most amazing aspects of the Internet is that amount of information it contains. But finding out what you want to know can take some practice, and a good search engine. Today’s Family First Site looks at one that I use with great regularity, and have had excellent results with it. It always gives that certain other popular site a run for it’s money every time.

The site is called DogPile.com, and before you think our column is going to the dogs, let me explain. This online site is one that is very easy to use. All you do it type in the phrase or words of what you are hunting for, and tell it to fetch. It will then scour the World Wide Web using several search engines. You will almost always get back a relevant result, if not several. There are other services here as well, such as web directories, search tools, and a section for favorite searches, listed by category. You can even make DogPile your default search engine from your web browser.
You may have a favorite search engine or site that works for you. I only share this site as it has given me wonderful results in a very timely manner. So stop on by and take it for a test drive. I am sure you will be as impressed as I am.

I have to admit that when I first got a computer, I was totally lost. I had worked in the electronics field for almost 15 years, but computers, well, they were (and are) a different breed of technology. That is why sites such as today’s Family First site such a wonderful find, and once having found them, become a bookmarked site in your web browser.

The site is called Ask Leo! It is an online site where Leo (who else) answers any and all computer related questions. All you have to do is submit them, and when he has the answer, he will post it on the site for your reference. It is also open for anyone to use and see as well. The variety of topics he provides help with is truly remarkable, and covers both hardware and software issues. Some of the more common ones relate to Windows XP Service Pack 2, Podcasting, the infamous “system resources” (and why am I so low), and comm ports. There is a section for previous “hot” questions, and answers to frequently asked questions. He has his own blog, and a healthy list of sites of interest round out the site. (Be sure to find and check out his resume as well, you will be impressed).
Like I said, finding sites that provide quality help are wonderful. Finding sites that provide that service and don’t charge, well, in my book, that’s a winning daily double. If he can answer the question I’m going to ask that’ll be a perfect trifecta. Enjoy your visit here today, and come back often.
