Smokey Says

“…growlin’ and a-howlin, and a-sniffing the air;

He can smell a fire before it starts to burn…”

The above lyrics are from a song I remember from my childhood. Growing up in a logging town, fire prevention, especially in the woods, was drummed into our heads at an early age. One of the tools that were used was a small bear that was recovered from a fire in New Mexico in the late 1940′s. The bear’s name was Smokey.

For years, Smokey the Bear has been used by the US Forest Service to educate both children and adults about the dangers of fire in the woods. The educational tools included comic books, short films for the theatre and television, and coloring books, among others. Today, Smokey has gone cyber, courtesy of the Internet. On the website featured today, a visitor can see what is going on with the Bear, as well as learning the lessons of fire prevention. The site is aimed for children, but adults will also enjoy this site.

So hope on over, and say hi to the Bear. You may want to load the latest version of Shockwave, because there is an interactive game that requires that plug-in. It is worth the download.
