Save $800 Per Year with this Quick Tip for Moms
July 11, 2010 No Comments
On average, parents spend $20 on baby food a week. Teri Gault the founder of TheGroceryGame.com and author of “Shop Smart, Save More” suggests cutting costs by 75% by making your own fresh baby food.
Most baby food jars are 4 oz. and can cost over a $1 per jar at regular price. You can save money on jars of baby food by buying on sale with coupons for as little as 40 cents per jar. But even at that price, it can cost four times more than making it yourself.
Here’s how to make it yourself:
- Steam the fresh vegetable just the way you like it for your baby. (It’s best not to add butter or seasoning).
- Whirl them in a food processor to your desired consistency, adding water as necessary.
- Spoon the pureed baby food into ice cube trays and freeze.
- Once frozen, remove frozen baby food cubes from the trays and store in a resealable plastic bag in the freezer.
- When you want to prepare a meal pull out a few cubes and heat in the mircrowave or stovetop. You’ve just cut your baby food costs by 75%, plus it’s easier and healthier for your baby.
When your favorite fresh produce is not in season, and prices are high, turn to frozen vegetables for savings of at least half off what it costs to buy a jar. The same process can be done with meat. A 2.5 oz. jar of baby food veal is over a $1 to purchase and at least half water. So figure a pound of veal can make about 15-16 servings. Prepare chicken, rice and vegetables with organic broth in the same way to make delicious baby food for pennies on the dollar. Or just simmer chicken in broth and puree to make cubes of pureed chicken to store in your freezer.
About Teri Gault and The Grocery Game
From her website: The Grocery Game grew out of a very smart and frugal hobby. Teri Gault (the company’s founder and CEO) was intent on saving her family money. Her common sense homestyle approach to good living included collecting coupons and matching them to grocery store sales. Eventually, this hobby became a passion. Teri would share her money saving ideas with family and friends who were more than impressed by her attention to detail and her ability to predict sales trends. After some time, it became obvious that Teri’s “hobby” was more than just a good idea to share with friends.
The business of The Grocery Game was underway. At first, The Grocery Game made “TERI’S LISTs” available mainly to members in Southern California. Later, by offering franchises to persons throughout the United States, the company was able to expand at an unprecedented pace. Currently, The Grocery Game offers “TERI’S LIST” in all 50 states, and 7 foreign countries. Tens of thousands of members log on each week and save hundreds of dollars a month on their groceries.
