President Elect

Well, it is about to start. When the Republican Convention ends this week, the Presidential campaign will move into high gear. The culmination will come on the first Tuesday in November when we go to the polls and cast our vote (or, if you are in Oregon, you will have done that days before in a state that has vote-by-mail). But the popular vote will not decide who becomes the next president. That function falls on one of the lesser known institutions of our government, the Electoral College. Today’s Family First site is one that explains the workings of this little known but most powerful portions of our government.
The site, called President Elect, is the unofficial site of the Electoral College. Here you can find out about how the college functions, and how it’s constitutional duty is to elect the President of the United States. Here you can find out information on every election held in our country, back to 1789 when George Washington was elected. There is quite a bit of information here, but is presented in an easy to read and understand format. There is also political news from newspapers around the country, as well as links to other web sites.
Is the Electoral College outdated? Should the President be elected by a direct vote of the people? Many citizens think it is time for a change. Our founding fathers institued this method of electing a President for all states to have an equal say who is elected. It has worked for over 200 years. This is how it is done, and this site explains it quite well.
