Please Take Action for the Egyptian Christians
October 12, 2011 1 Comment
American Christians often lament the squelching of their religion everywhere they turn under the guise of selective adherence to the Constitution by atheists and other “progressive” people.
However, this situation pales in comparison to the violence and discrimination Coptic Christians are facing in Egypt, even as you read this.
Just 2 days ago in Cairo, 26 unarmed Christian demonstrators were gunned down by Egyptian security forces, according to a press release from Toronto-based One Free World International.
“Egyptian Christians are in urgent need of our help,” stated Rev. Majed El Shafie, President and Founder of One Free World International. “We cannot afford to sit idly by and leave our brothers and sisters to face this crisis alone. Please stand up and make your voice heard on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Egypt who live and worship in daily apprehension and fear of violent reprisals.”
The shots were fired into the crowd when clashes broke out between the peaceful demonstrators and young armed men who attacked them. The Christians were demonstrating at a local television station to raise awareness of the new interim government’s lack of response to the persecution of Christians. Security forces indiscriminately fired into the crowd killing both attackers and victims.
According to www.gotquestions.org a Coptic Christian is an Egyptian Christian. They were founded by John Mark, the author of the Book of Mark, and were part of the East/West Schism of the church after the turn of the first century.
Action
To help, there are two main things One Free World International says we can do: pray and write letters/emails.
Pray for the protection of the Christians from the security forces and from the bandits.
Pray for their strength in healing the wounded and helping the families of the victims recover.
Pray for a strengthening of their faith to stand strong in the face of this repression.
Pray the new Egyptian government can find a place for all faiths in their new structure.
Write or call the Egyptian ambassador or representative to your country to stop these acts against Christians.
Write or call your Foreign Minister or Secretary of State to ask them to fight for these people and denounce the repression of them by the Egyptian government.
Write or call your President or Prime Minister to appeal to them to intervene and use the full influence of their offices to help stop these tragic acts.
Here are the addresses for these people in both the United States and Canada – please take action today to help stop this violence and global precedence of repressing Christianity.
