Parade Magazine

Growing up, I was amazed at the ability of the Sunday paper to feature the same magazine in both the newspapers we received. The ability to customize the same magazine for two cities at separate ends of the state was mind boggling to a 10-year old.

The magazine I am referring to is still around today, and you are most likely familiar with it. It is Parade magazine, and is featured in just about every Sunday paper in the country. Here on their online site you can respond to a Parade article or put your head to the test with the E-Marilyn BrainTeaser. There is also a chance to visit the teen-age equivalent to this magazine, ReACT. You can also correspond with the many columnists in the magazine as well.

On February 5,2005 you published a story by Tom Seligson (Isn't it timr to right the wrong?). I was impressed and moved and followed up, as suggested, by writing the appropriate authorities to encourage a stamp being issued to commemorate the African/American sailors dishonored by the government. Thereafter, I wrote to Walter Scott requesting an update. Then I wrote Parade. Zip. Then I checked with the post office to see if, in fact, the stamp had been issued. There have been stamps for Bart Simpson, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Marilyn, etc..etc - but so far, no stamp for the sailors. This was an article that really stayed with me. It niggled my conscience. I resent that the Parade Magazine will get all gungho to get readers to react to stories, but do nothing to follow-up on results. This is something that deserved recognition. I just finished reading Walter Anderson's memoir, "Meant to Be", and it brought all the frustration of the Parade story back to my priority list. I STILL want to know if a stamp was issued (the post office tells me No) and, if not, I think it should be persued - if not by Parade, then by the contributing reporter Tom Seligson. It was a great story. It deserves repeating. These great patriots deserve the recognition so long overdue - and so shamefully neglected. Make it happen!! dkelley Yancey One Wampanoag Road South Yarmouth MA 02664

Oh, Please, you want us to listen and believe what Hollywood tells us about global warming and now we can learn something from the TV docs? This has gone too far! I don't believe anything that comes out of Hollywood as they are not scientists, doctors, teachers, etc. They are full of themselves. Don't give them more to add to their off-balance egos.

I was wondering if you can find out why HBO canceled Deadwood? My husband and I are big fans, he more than I. We bought all the series so far and now find it has been cancelled, and have no idea why. Thanks

Ref: Samuel L. Jackson I read the article on the movie, Coach Carter, on Sunday, January 9, 2005, in the Parade Magazine. On Tuesday, January 11, 2005, I watched Dr. Phil interview Samuel L. Jackson and the real Coach Carter. I have always admired Samuel L. Jackson as a human being, however, that admiration has stimulated to the very top off my all-time favorite people I admire in this world. He is a real man with a real family and his family values needs to be shared with the younger generations today.

I would like to share information with the Cisneros family in Hutto. The Hippos gonna have a strong football team this year? I think you could consider a divorce and a few months later go by yourselves to Zihuatenejo and get hitched again. This time, don't tell nobody. And when you get into trouble, right there in the US Constition are the bankrupcy laws. Don't be embarrassed tofile for bankruptcy. Don Trump has done it several times; so did Mark Twain and Michael Jackson. Linda Miller could use bakruptcy help today. The laws are in the constitution to allow americans who get trapped under a mountain of debt a way out, and to keep rich business men from throwing people into debtor's prison. Some scumbags who run a local casino here in northern NM ran a radio ad telling people that if they were beginning to have problems with paying Christmas bills, to come out to the casino. In no time you will have won the cash to pay everything off. I think that casino is run by Goomba Gotti. seriously, if you need some simple direction, I suggest that you look on the web for your nearest Federal Bankruptcy Court. If you are smart and good with numbers, it is not necessary to hire a lawyer, who charge $800 or so and don't do too much. good luck, david in sf

What happened to Carole Simpson? She used to do the week-end news for ABC and was good at it. I haven't seen her for quite awhile and I miss her.
  13. C. Dan Hammond says:
Dear Walter Scott (re "Personality Parade" column): This is going back a ways, but what happend to the careers of Susan Oliver, Rex Reason, and Jeffery Hunter? All were reasonably successful and promising '50's/'60's movie/tv actors, and Jeff Hunter secured leading roles such as in the classic film "The Searchers" with John Wayne and as the pilot episode ("The Cage", with Susan Oliver, later transformed into the two-parter "The Menagerie")initial captain of the "Enterprise" in the original "Star Trek", before William Shatner was hired for the 2nd pilot. And Reason starred in "This Island Earth" among other flicks, yet all faded from public view by the 1970's. Did they die, change careers, get too old for producers' acceptance, or what? -Sincerely, C. Dan Hammond, Brookville, Ohio
  14. Michele Glaser says:
You should do a follow-up article on Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett from the one you did back in Deceber 1989 since they are currently working on a fourth television special together which is to air this summer.
