Each generation has one – the must-have manual for how to raise kids. Many moms these days were “Dr. Spock” babies when they were young. In recent years, moms looked to Dr. Sears or Dr. Brazelton for their new bundles of joy. Now there’s a new kid on the block who is just the ticket for brand-new moms of newborns to one-year-olds.
A just-released book called The Better Way to Care for Your Baby – A Week-by-Week Illustrated Companion for Parenting and Protecting Your Child Using the Latest Safety Techniques by Robin Elise Weiss, L.C.C.E., I.C.C.E. – C.P.E., C.L.C. (Fair Winds Press, May 2010, $19.99, ISBN-13 978-1-59233-420-9) is a break-through instructional book that is soup-to-nuts information for info-hungry moms.

Weiss is a nationally-recognized pregnancy and baby care expert who has written ten books on pregnancy and childbirth. She is also a childbirth and postpartum educator, certified doula, and lactation counselor so we think she knows a thing or two about babies and the mamas who care for them. Oh yeah, and a mother of eight.
The book is arranged by your baby’s age, by month and includes the following sections:
• Checklists of what you should know for that stage and what you will need to have for your baby at that age. Examples include: schedule a date night, check in with older siblings, decide if your baby is ready for solids, be prepared for a baby meltdown
• Information about the progress of your newborn’s growth
• A “What to Watch For” section which can help moms see any red-flag conditions in their child and understand if they can fix it themselves or if they need professional help
• Baby Clues which gives you a breakdown of the milestones and cues you should be seeing from your baby such as reflexes, eye contact as well as verbal and physical responses
• Mama Moments gives moms ideas about how to take care of themselves while they learn how to care for their little one.
In a week-by-week break out for each month, Weiss includes sections called “Eat” “Sleep” and “Play” with techniques on how to feed your baby specific foods and liquids, information on how often your child should be waking (or not waking) at night, and what exactly is going on your child’s brain when they are playing – such as cause and effect or what we like to call “Fetch.”
The book is filled with beautiful photographs, detailed diagrams (such as your baby’s teeth), call-out boxes with tips and ideas as well as the easy checklists all over the book. It’s written in a casual style, like a friend telling you how she takes care of her baby. Be sure you check out the back of the book for a ton of resources for many, many subjects. As Weiss says, enjoy your baby!
