I’m considered an old geezer by internet standards. I got my first computer in 1993, and by 1995, I was on the web.
I’ve seen the internet grow in a lot of ways. On the positive, it has become the ultimate storehouse of man’s knowledge. You’re a search engine entry away from finding out anything you need to know, and a little double-checking will confirm that what you have found is the truth.
On the downside, it has become the tool for a few unscrupulous individuals who create spyware, worms and viruses to promulgate spam and steal priceless personal information. It would be nice if they were treated as the despicable criminals that they are.
Additionally, I’ve seen moneymaking schemes come and go. In 1998-1999, I was making a high three-figure income for referring people to sites to sign up for free services. In 2000, it all came crashing down.
That was followed by the Google era. Google has become what Microsoft would like to be: the dominant corporate entity on the web. But that’s not to say the web is theirs to own. Google could disappear tomorrow, and while that event would have very tangible effects, the web would still function.
So Google is the boss at the moment. Their solid business plan implies that they will be around for a long time.
Today’s FamilyFirst site is Google’s comprehensive listing of what they have to offer. They have a vast gift basket of free services, and they are adding more all the time. They certainly play a large part in my day-to-day internet usage, and that’s because I’m very impressed with what they have to offer.
See for yourself.
