Make the Most of Your Time
June 15, 2010 No Comments
These days it can be hard to get a handle on your time. Especially if you are interested in going into business for yourself, the demands of the job can sometimes be overwhelming. And since it always seems like there is some little detail to attend to, it can be hard to take a look at the big picture and know what you SHOULD be spending your time on. Here is an exercise to help you get control back of your time.
1. First it’s important to understand how you already spend your time. Get a schedule and fill it out with how you currently spend your minutes and hours. Colored markers might be handy (and fun) for this.
2. After you have the data, review it and organize it into categories. Possible categories might include: Email, Internet Surfing, Phone Calls, etc.
3. Next it’s time to list out your priorities. After all, you can’t tell what needs to change if you don’t know where you want to be, right? Do a little soul searching and really figure out where your passions lie. That will help you figure out where you should be spending your time.
4. Compare and contrast your priorities with your schedule as it currently exists. Make notes of where you can make changes and think creatively when it comes to fitting in the things that are most important to you.
5. After completing all of these steps, draw up a new and improved schedule, one that finds time for everything that you want to get done in a day. Remember that this schedule is not set in stone: don’t let it stress you out! Rather it should be a gentle guide to helping you live your life more on your terms.
