Kids Helping Kids – How One Man’s Organization is Helping Inspire True Charity

As parents, we often wonder how to instill character in our children. Once we teach these principles, then what?
Terry Bomar is trying to help take this character to the next level.
Bomar founded the organization, Young Adventurers, in 1992 to help give what he calls “average” kids an opportunity to do some cool things they wouldn’t normally get to do. His guidance was to teach character and vision.
From what started as a small after-school group of 4-5 kids has grown into an international non-profit that is changing lives and helping small charities. The organization’s national spokesperson is Dan Haggerty, best known for his role as the real life mountain man “Grizzly Adams” on television and on film. They are currently working on a television series called “Be Someone’s Hero.”
As the youngest child of a single mother of 5, Bomar knows how challenging raising good kids can be. He saw his mom working hard to provide for him and his siblings.
He says he was a great kid up until he turned 13 and started running with some bad kids, doing drugs and generally causing distress for his mom. He says from age 13 to 17, he grew his hair down to his waist and learned to do drugs only on the weekends so he could keep from getting kicked out of school.
One night, his mother arrived home from church and kicked open his bedroom door. She said to him, “I turned you loose tonight. From this day forward, you don’t belong to me. You belong to God,” and she walked out.
Bomar says he was “dumbfounded” He says even in his haze, he understood he had been “disconnected from the most important person in my life.” This was an apex moment in his life and a method I’ve never heard of for straightening out your child. But it worked.
Within 3 weeks, he became a Christian and within 3 months, he was ministering to his friends. Then he began ministering in prisons and a year later, he gave his first sermon. After that, he became a pastor, missionary and prison chaplain. God took him in and gave him a direction for his life.
Now, his organization helps kids find value, purpose and direction in their own lives. Young Adventurers operates in 7 states and 5 countries, according to their website. Besides Haggerty, other accomplished people who have been involved in the group include David Carradine, the late Doug McClure, Jean Michele Cousteau as well as atheletes in the NFL, PGA, Indy 500 and NHRA drivers and many others.
Over 12,000 kids have been helped through Young Adventurers. And with the “Be Someone’s Hero” television show, Bomar is helping connect kids with special needs kids so they can help each other.
Some of the organizations they have worked with include Quantum House, Island Dolphin Care, Wheels for Kids and Angel Flight Southeast.
