“Daddy, I really, really, REALLY want a tamagotchi”.
If you don’t know what a Tamagotchi is by now, where have you been for the past five or six months? It is only the latest rage in kids’ toys. If you remember Cabbage Patch dolls, Pet Rocks, and Tickle-me Elmo, then this little creation will be right up your alley.
A Tamagotchi (Japanese for “cute little egg”) is a portable virtual pet. Today’s website, In Search of Tamagotchi, explores and explains the origins of this tiny creature. The same company that brought us the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Bandi, manufactures it. The lure of this pet is that, like a real baby, it requires attention. It wakes up; it needs to be fed. It needs to visit the doctor. You have to play with it, and keep him happy. He also needs to have his diaper changed occasionally, and getting a good night’s sleep is important.
On a recent vacation trip, while driving along, we got use to hearing alarms going off. It was time for someone’s baby to be fed, or was waking from a nap, or wanting to be played with. Something struck me at that time: these little plastic eggs can teach responsibility. Being responsible and caring for someone, even if it is a LCD animal, is a great learning and growing experience. Have fun at this site, and good luck on trying to find one of these. They sell out FAST.
