Fun Trick Meal Resources for April Fool’s Day

While the true origin of April Fool’s Day is not known for sure, many speculate it has to do with the change to the Gregorian calendar which moved the new year from March 25th through April 1st to January 1st.

The speculation is that because word traveled slowly back in 1582, many people didn’t believe the calendar had changed and continued to celebrate the new year around this time of the year.

Those “fools” were then the subject of ridicule and had jokes played on them.  The tradition started in France where the tricked were called poisson d’avril or April fish because newly born fish are easily caught when fishing, according to the website www.april-fools.us.

Other countries have different traditions, according to the site. The tradition of putting a “Kick Me” sign on someone’s back came from a Scottish April Fool’s tradition. In England, you can only be tricked in the morning. Any jokes played after noon bring bad luck.

Here are some great joke food websites I found so you can play tricks on your family in the morning:

Disney’s Family Fun: http://familyfun.go.com/april-fools-day/april-fools-day-recipes/  – including cupcake meatloaf, chicken not-pie, and fake spaghetti and malt balls.

Allrecipes.com: http://allrecipes.com//HowTo/april-fools-day-dinner/Detail.aspx – including a recipe for fish stick surprise.

Cdkitchen.com: http://www.cdkitchen.com/recipes/cat/553/ – this one includes lots of rather disgusting sounding trick foods like “Day Old Bathwater” made from yummy ice cream and lemonade and others like “Dog Food Dip” and “Kitty Litter Cake” for some of the tame ones.

Don’t forget to make the milk blue!  Have fun and don’t get fooled yourself. Happy New Year! Oops…
