Fun Facts About The New American Idol Scotty McCreery

Last night’s winner, McCreery, is a 17-year-old singing sensation from Garner, North Carolina. He is the youngest male to win and the second youngest Idol ever, behind Jordin Sparks, who was also 17 when she won. McCreery is reported to have been waiting since Season 1 to audition and did so as soon as he hit the eligibility age.

On the American Idol contestant homepage, this Garner Magnet High School student lists his favorite artists as Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Hank Williams and Conway Twitty. He has toured nationally with a singing group Die Meistersingers. He started out singing tenor but now has a rich deep voice that is rather striking, considering his age.

His father was born in Puerto Rico, which led to the sweet, apple-faced McCreery joking, “I have a little bit of J.Lo in me,” at one point during the season. Scotty’s birthday is October 9, 1993.

Scotty reportedly sang his first song at his one-year doctor’s appointment when he hummed a nursery rhyme. Sources also quote his mother, Judy, saying her son used to sit in the back of the school bus and sing Elvis songs to his school mates.

He’s an all-American boy who was a pitcher on his high school junior varsity baseball team and sacked groceries at the local grocery store. He’s 5 foot 10 inches, 165 pounds and throws right-handed, although once he began advancing in the Idol competition, he had to forego playing on this season’s baseball team.

McCreery lists his favorite quote on the American Idol contestant page as Phillipians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” That strength came through last night when he won the vote and the championship – great job, Scotty!
