When photographer Allen Clark left for a European vacation a few weeks ago, he never thought he’d find himself face to face with one of the world’s most notorious computer hacker, Julian Assange, editor of WikiLeaks.

“Julian granted me a tiny peek behind the curtain where he has been living for this past year,” says Clark. “Being a photographer has awarded me the luxury of meeting some interesting people over the years. I see myself as an observer who tries to remain neutral, so that I don’t get in the way of a great portrait.”

Allen was surprised by the man who have been portrayed as an evil genius in the media. “…what I discovered was that Julian isn’t the demon most people would want you to believe, and I found him to be very caring and kind to those around him. Protective, yes. But for someone in his position, I understand. People like their secrets, and they are not happy when you expose them.”

The man who has photographed presidents George W. Bush and George H. W. Bush, legendary newsman Walter Kronkite and recording artist Dave Matthews spent three days with Assange, who is awaiting an extradition appeal hearing to take place in the high courts in London in mid-July. He currently lives in an undisclosed location and is accused of sexual offenses in Sweden, and allegedly posted thousands of sensitive documents from several governments on the internet via his website WikiLeaks.

“I hope the world sees him in a different light because of this session and gives him a fair chance for others to see who he is as another human being, who is real, and lives and breathes the same oxygen that you and I breath,” says Clark.
