Constitution Day – September 17th – is upon us. Arguably, The Constitution is the most important document in the history of the world as it layed out the structure for the most successful government to this point. Do you know what activities (if any) your children’s school has planned?
Federal law mandates any schools receiving federal funding must recognize Constitution Day in some form. Below is a video of the winners of the Constituting America We The People 9/17 Contest – Best Song, Best Poem, Best Essay, Best PSA, Best Emblem, etc., and the entries are included in the video. Please watch this video and send it along to your principal so they can show it Friday and watch it with your kids too.

The We The People 9/17 Contest is designed to rekindle and instill a passion and enthusiasm for learning about our United States Constitution and our country’s founding principles. The Contest challenged students to submit an essay, short film, poem, Public Service Announcement (PSA), artwork or original song about the Constitution and its relevance today.
The mission of Constituting America is to reach, educate and inform America’s youth and her citizens about the importance of the U.S. Constitution and the foundation it sets forth regarding our freedoms and rights, in new and innovative ways. It was founded by actress turned activist Janine Turner and long-time DC political force Cathy Gillespie.

About the Contest Winners (from a recent Constituting America press release)
Jacob Wood, 17, will begin his senior year this fall. He enjoys various genres of music, where he expresses himself through singing, composing and playing various instruments. Jacob’s current goals involve majoring in music in college. Jacob is very involved in his church where he participates in helping to lead worship and youth activities. He lives in California with his three sisters and parents.

Jorey Cohen, 11, a native of Arizona, is in 6th grade. Her favorite sport is softball. She has a brown belt in karate and enjoys reading and sleeping in late. Jorey’s favorite subjects are writing and math. She has a younger sister, three dogs and a ferret.

Joseph Valencia is a 13-year-old homeschooled 8th grader from Colorado. He is the oldest of 5 children, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Joseph started playing acoustic guitar at age 10 and first picked up an electric guitar at 12. Besides music, his interests include basketball, reading, and video games. He truly believes in one nation under God.

Halley Moak, 7, was born in Colorado and still lives in the Rocky Mountains. She has a paint horse named Della and a mini schnauzer named Chloe. Halley loves to rock climb, ride horses and snow ski. She has no siblings, but lots of good friends!

Evita Duffy, 10, resides in Wisconsin with her mom, dad and five younger siblings. She enjoys art, nature, soccer, and is an accomplished log roller who even owns her own log! Lumberjack sports run in her family and every summer, she competes at the World Lumberjack Competition in Hayward, Wisconsin. Evita has a new interest in current events and politics because her father is running for Congress in the 2010 election.

Spencer Kolssak, 14, is a homeschooled student who lives in Illinois with his parents, three brothers and two cats. Spencer has many interests, including writing, models, music, art, computer design and Boy Scouts. He enjoys nearly every form of creative expression. He is a Christian and loves the Constitution.

Bethany Rachel Carter, 17, is a native of Alabama, where she lives with her parents, Mark and Sandy, 15-year-old sister, Anna, and middle-school-aged brothers, John Mark and Jared Ben. She is one of twelve seniors at her high school where she first discovered her passion for thinking and writing.

Sadie Mae Albritton, 9, was born in Washington, has lived in Georgia, Utah, and now lives in Alabama. She has one brother and three sisters. She is on the honor roll at her school, loves art, plays soccer and softball, and enjoys reading, playing her violin and cooking.

Katie Strawinski was born in Georgia. She is a 16-year-old high school sophomore and a talented cross-country runner, scholar and filmmaker. Katie learned much she knows about film from her sister Kelly who is now majoring in film at University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Katie is an “A” student and is interested in science and art.

Olga Zubashko, 17, was born in Ukraine, and immigrated to America when she was eight years old. She is currently a senior in New York and is extremely interested in politics and debate. Olga is fluent in Russian and English and enjoys dancing and playing tennis in her spare time.

Carisse Hamlet, 16, born on Labor Day, is the third and last daughter of West Indian immigrants, Alcott and Celina Hamlet. She plays five instruments and has two older sisters, Cathy-Marie, 23 and Camille, 17 who are both currently studying, like their parents, to be medical professionals. Carisse plans to pursue a career in the life or physical sciences.
