October 24, 2010 No Comments
Picking up your room, feeding the dog, washing dishes – teaching kids how to be helpful is the purpose of best-selling author and Christian minister Max Lucado in his new book “One Hand, Two Hands – Oh, the ways we can help with our hands,” out this month from Thomas Nelson Publishers (978-1-4003-1649-6, $16.99).
But that’s not all. Lucado also teaches us our hands give hugs, help friends, share snacks and pray.
We follow a young girl and her puppy as she imagines her stuffed animals come to life to discover the many things your hands can do – “Scratching and latching and petting a pup…combing and brushing and holding a cup.”
Through her adventures, she and her animal friends also realize hands can be helpful – “Wash dishes with Mommy. Put toys in the box. Clean this and wipe that. Even pick up our socks.” (You have to see the picture of the little girl extracting her brother’s socks from his gym bag!)
And the good things in life: “Give a gift. Write Grandma a letter…we make people feel better.” He closes the book with a sweet little prayer to remind us to keep using our hands for His glory again and again:
“One hand, two hands,
Five fingers, ten.
God, thanks for my hands.
Please use them again.”
With colorful, happy illustrations by award-winning illustrator Gaby Hanson, this book is delightful for parents and children. All the animals are smiling, the pictures are detailed, and the rhyming verse has a smooth cadence that’s sure to please your children.
Lucado teaches kids to be servants of God by using their most valuable tool – their hands! He teaches us that God gave us our hands to help us show our love for him by helping others.
What a wonderful lesson to give your kids or grandkids through this book.
