Apollo 18
August 5, 1998 No Comments
Last month, one of America’s living heroes passed away. Alan Shephard, one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts succumbed to leukemia. He was 74. He was also the American into space, and the fifth man to walk on the moon. He was a pioneer in the true sense of the word.
In a way, he and his fellow astronauts are responsible for today’s FamSite. It is called Apollo 18, named after the space program that had the mission of achieving President Kennedy’s goal of putting a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. It is a site that is full of information about the history of our space program, and educational tools that can be used to teach young ones about the program. There is a list of employment opportunities, as well as forums on such diverse topics such as space colonization, the international space station, and a lunar colony. Up to date news is available as well.
So point your browser here, and enjoy the trip. The missions that have gone on before are worth remembering, and learning about. It is a part of our national heritage.
