America’s Heart and Soul

By Joel Comm August 4, 2004 23 Comments

For the past several weeks, our nation has been under attack from forces that are bent on telling us how bad we have it, how our very foundations of life are being compromised, and the only thing we have to look forward to is more of the same. There was a film released that only tried to hype that insecurity, and blame our nations leader for those problems, and he did so by attacking our way of life. Well, there are two sides to every coin, and today’s Family First site looks at the positive side of what makes our country so great.

The site is called America’s Heart and Soul, a new movie that actually has a positive message. It is a celebration of people, a journey that travels through each region of the country offering touching vignettes and heart pounding cinematography. Its a peek into someones heart, a journey into the soul of another human being, and a thrill ride into the sights and sounds of a nation. This is first class entertainment that will inspire you and make you proud to be part of this great country.

So check out the theatre listings on the site, and go see it. It will leave you with a more accurate portrait of what our country is all about. Maybe Michael Moore should see it.

Alright. I think both sides have made their points. If anyone wants to comment on the topic of this particular site, America's Heart and Soul, I encourage you to do so. But I will be deleting other posts that continue along the lines of this political ping-pong. Personally, I am hoping the movie arrives on DVD shortly so I may view it myself. Thank you. Mayor

I'm sorry you don't see them as legitimate accomplishments. I do. Bush is not perfect as far as I am concerned. But I support the majority of what he has done in office. I don't consider myself uninformed. I read the news regularly and listen to dissenting opinion in order to look at both sides. But I have gained wisdom in learning not to "argue" or "debate" with the likes of yourself. Your "open mind" is merely a facade and I would not waste my time taking the list item by item. It wouldn't matter how much logic I presented. You would not listen anyhow. Thankfully, I am not concerned with your opinions about me, nor your condescending superior tone. I feel no need to defend myself against your accusations. You can believe whatever you want to believe and I stand firm, unaffected. The truth is, I find your perspective on the "truth" to be quite sad, if not hostile. It will lead to your destruction. I pray you do not take other innocents with you along the way, continuing the cycle which you have found yourself in. However, I am concerned about the future of our country. I am concerned about the pervasive liberalism that is destroying our once great nation. I know what I believe and why I believe it. My eyes are wide open. I guess it will all come out in the wash someday. :-)

That list is just too funny for words. I actually thought at one point you were kidding. I'm glad to see that this time rather than send me links to Bush's website, you copied items from it. I wish I had the time to discuss each and every "accomplishment" with you but I simply do not have the time. I also feel that once again, your list does a great job of proving my point all on its own. Frank, I do not hate President Bush, I hate what he has done to our country. You have offered not a single bit of insight to this discussion and in doing so your level of intelligence is evident. What good does Bush stand for exactly? Two failed Wars? Corporate corruption? Utter disdain for the environment? Lie after lie to the American people? Dodging Vietnam? Tax breaks for the rich? I feel sorry for the two of you because you refuse to see the truth about Bush. You do not seek the truth as is evident from your ability to only gather information form the George Bush website. Any person with even a small shred of intelligence can easily see what a miserable failure Bush is as a President. Feel free to vote with your eyes closed, I will instead vote with an open, informed mind.
  4. Jill says:
I'm sorry Rich, I don't remember mentioning anything about Democrats vs. Republicans. As far as I can remember, I was speaking specifically about the horrendous performance of president Bush. You can blindly think of it in black and white terms if you care to, but I choose to evaluate people on their actions. I also never mentioned the UN. Why are you choosing to defend Bush on accusations never made? Maybe because there is a little guilt? By the way, have you heard of the UN cease-fire in January of 1992? How about the 15,000 peace keepers sent by the security council? I guess Clinton should have allowed the ethnic cleansing to continue, right? Maybe YOU should read a history book. I love that Bush supports NEVER mention a single accomplishment of president Bush. Instead they choose to Attack people like President Clinton, a person who ISN'T CURRENTLY RUNNING FOR OFFICE. Never will you here a Bush supporter speak of all of the progress he has made because they know his presidency has been a miserable failure. It's time to stop this DEM vs. REP business and open your eyes to the overwhelming facts about the tremendous failure and corruption of the Bush administration. It is time to put the future of America before you own partisan beliefs.
  5. RIch says:
Jill, Remember Bosnia and Croatia, where Bill Clinton committed thousands of our troops in a military action AGAINST and WITHOUT the blessing of the United Nations, where we are STILL INVOLVED TODAY? But I suppose those little incidents slipped your mind, as there were abosolutely NO US INTERESTS in that area! Read your history books, and you will find every 2oth Century war the US was involved in was started by a Democratic President!
  6. Jill says:
Bill Clinton made a bad PERSONAL choice and was a disgrace to his family. It had nothing to do with you or I and it certainly did not result in hundreds of young men and woman being killed. Say what you will about Clinton, but the country was never in better shape and there is no way you can refute that. Bush will go down in history as one of the worst presidents ever. I don't even want to call him "president" because he did not actually win.
  7. Rich says:
Yeah, sure, and Bill Clinton was a saint who didn't disgrace that office either......
  8. Jill says:
Frank, You must be kidding when you call "The Bush administration is the most honorable bunch of people in many years." You need to do some research my friend. Bush is a disgrace to the White House and I pray he is removed.

Whoa!! I must have missed how GW is imposing his religious beliefs on this country. He may be following what he believes in his heart, but as forcing religion on us, I must have missed that show. Not that John Kerry hasn't been doing the same thing. Find out why (if you can) he voted against the Lacey Peterson bill when it came to the Senate floor. Something about his religious beliefs would not allow him to vote in favor of it! But of course, if he were to become President, that wouldn't matter would it?
  11. If "honor" involves a constant disregard for the welfare of the American people in favor of widening the gap between the wealthy and the disenfranchised, ignoring the balances clearly dictated by the Constitution (probably because he never read the thing), and trying to impose his religious beliefs on a country specifically established to be free of such tethers (and give everyone the freedom to practice their own faith without fear of persecution), then I guess you're right, Frank! And while Kerry certainly wouldn't be my first choice to run the country, I can't imagine anyone else doing a worse job than Bush. I'm willing to give him a chance.
  12. Frank says:
Hey Captain Tralfaz, John Kerry just said that HE AGREES with George W. Bush's move into Iraq, EVEN IF WMDS don't exist. Flip flops again and again. He voted for it before he thought about voting against it before he changed his mind about voting for it before voting against it. The Bush administration is the most honorable bunch of people in many years. I think liberals hate Bush because he is a decent person and because he's done a great job. The history books will tell the truth. In the meantime, in your world "up" is "down" and "night" is "day". Here's to you gaining true perspective.
  13. No connection between 9/11 and Iraq has ever been proven, Frank. It's unfortunate that so many Americans have been tricked into believing such a connection gave us license to invade a country that was really much less deserving of our attention than a long list of others. It's hypocritical for us to purport exportation of democracy when we can't even secure our own liberties at home from an administration that is an enemy to the people it mis-governs. I just hope the next election cleans house and is enough to clear out the foulness of the past four years of corruption and greed.

Mr. Rich Your reply scares me. Why you alway put the words "black people" in quotes? Are we really that strange and unusual to you and your readers on this site. While youre scratching your head, trying to remember an entry this site posted about a black person, you should read an article called "How Blacks Invented Rock and Roll". You will be shocked to learn there was a brother named Chuck Berry rocked nd rolled long before Elvis got the idea to copied him. The article appeared in Ebony...It's online, you can find it through google. While your at it maybe you'll discover that rap was invented by a black man and the movie Rocky is pure-fiction. Then again it sounds like you'd be happier with your blinders on. Stick to movies like America's Heart and Soul, watch Fox News and keep looking for the man in the moon (he should be easy for you to see...he's white).
  15. Frank says:
It is amazing how Americans have forgotten 9/11 already. They have forgotten that terrorists want to kill them and their families. We went into Iraq for a VERY good reason. Those who can not see it are the ones who are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past. Hitlers and Husseins thrive on people like this who just don't get it. Michael Moore is a big fat idiot. Those who believe what they see in his film are even bigger fools.
  16. RIch Cunningham says:
Penny, I tried to send you an email response to your posting, but it came back as undeliverable. But here is a copy of what I tried to send you: Actually, over the past 9 years we have featured several sites that are Mark Twain related. I don't consider his works to be racist at all, in fact they reflect the values and morals of the times that they were written in. What may not be apparent from the site that you visited today is that several comments had been removed by the owner of Family First due to language that was not appropriate, even though the comments were relevant. I rarely respond to postings on Family First, but in these two instances, I felt it necessary to since they accused the site of being racist and teaching hate. I have chosen and written every article on this site since 1997, when it was started as the World Village Family Site of the Day. My groundrules for selecting sites were simple: Every site I featured would be one that I would not have a problem letting my children read, and visit. I like to think I have succeeded in that regard. I would refer you to the Master Archives on the main page, and see the variety and content of the sites that I have chosen. If you find fault with any of them, please let me know, and I will explain my reasoning why I chose that particular site. You will find that I am somewhat open-minded, and willing to listen to any constructive criticism. Rich Cunningham Family First Site of the Day editor
  17. Penny says:
I had no idea what was going on here. I thought they had a forum to express differnet views, not to merely agree with everything they had written. I'm choosing to see Fahrenheit 9/11. Just because it doesn't have a happy ending doesn't me its bad for you. If Mark Twain's "Huckleberry Finn" was to come out today, Family First would no doubt call it harmful and racist. In reality Twain wrote against racism and slavery.
  18. Rich Cunningham says:
Mr. Ashbrook, I challenge you to show one site of the over 2500 that we feature that teaches hate! I take personal exception to your charge, one that shows that you haven't visited all (or any) of our sites. Just because someone has an opinion that is different from yours does not mean that it teaches hate. Never once have I criticized Michael Moore for what he has said or done. What I have done is to choose sites that present a different viewpoint than he has, ones that contrast with is viewpoints. If that, in your opinion, is teaching hate, then that is your opinion. I feel sorry for you that you cannot objectively look at all sides of a topic and respect that others have a different opinion from yours. I firmly believe in what Thomas Jefferson says about free speech, that it is not hearing what you agree with, but having to hear what you don't agree with. If you think Michael Moore is such a right-on dude, why not check out these web sites, www.moorelies.com and www.mooreexposed.com and you will see just how accurate his facts really are. Maybe if he saw "America's Heart and Soul", he would feel different about this country. Maybe if you saw it, you would as well.
  19. Leon Ashbrook says:
I am somewhat concerned that you are using you 'family' forum to teach youngsters to hate and feel different from people who criticise their government. Specifically your suggestion that Mr. M. Moore should see 'American Heart and Soul'. He is every bit much a part of the American Heart and Soul as you are. Your unfortunate allusion to Michael Moore's film seems to me to be a bold and brazen attempt to politicize an otherwise rather nice forum for children.
  20. Rich Cunningham says:
Marshelle, I am concerned about your comments about our not having one single entry about black people on our website. As one of the editors of this website (and the person who has selected each and every Family First site, and its predcessor Family Site of the Day), I have presented sites that reflect every race and color in the world that I can find. I have written every word on every review. There have been over 2500 of these sites featured, and there have been sites that feature "black people", as you call them. If you are interested in finding them, I would suggest that you check the Master Archive links on the main Family First site page, especially before you make such comments. I can't recall them off the top of my head, but I know we have featured sites on the Civil Rights movement (January 18, 1998, May 21, 1999 (just 5 days after the Rock and Roll Museum site), & February 22, 2000), as well as other sites that touch on "black people" as a subject matter. I don't feel a need to emphasize race or color during a review. Like the late Dr. Martin Luther King, I like to judge on the content, not the color, of a subject, be it a person or a website. As for your comments on the the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I have been to that museum, spent an entire day ther, and they do pay tribute to the contributions of black musicians. There is a very, very good film that you see there that lasts about 15 minutes on that very subject. But as for black people starting rock and roll, that is stretching it. To quote John Lennon, "Before Elvis, there was nothing". The accepted historical date for the beginning of rock and roll is the day Elvis recorded "That's Alright, Mama", July 5th, 1954 (three days after I was born). Other dates can be arugued as the start, but the rock and roll genre evolved, it didn't just happen. Arguments could be made that Alan Freed coined the phrase in Cleveland in 1952.
  21. Marshelle Smith says:
This web site scares me. Since 1995 they've not had on single entry about black people. How can that be? I guess they don't fit in the 'family' Look at their story on the Rock and Roll hall of Fame. Here's what they write: "Since the early 1950's, the driving force in popular music has become known as rock and roll. Elvis, the Beatles, Buddy Holly, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, the list goes on and on." As I recall it was black folks who started rock and roll and the white man copied it several year later. Why not get a taste of reality and try dcblackpride.org instead. Here, all God's peoples are represented and respected!
  22. Todd Harrison says:
To imply that it is unpatriotic to question a government's actions is contrary to the fundamental principles of democracy on which America was founded. Michael Moore made Fahrenheit 9/11 because he LOVES America and he doesn't want to its international reputation further tarnished by the actions of a war-mongering head of state. He belives in an America of peace and freedom, not in one of bombing raids and "Patriot Acts." Instead of dismissing Fahrenheit 9/11 outright in favour of America's Heart and Soul, why not suggest that people see BOTH films? Diversity of opinion is, after all, a cornerstone of any free society. Sincerely, Todd Harrison Toronto, Ontario, Canada
