A Unique Use of Twitter Helps Raise Awareness and Gives Your Company Free Marketing

Louise Sattler’s road to recovery from thyroid cancer involves a route that is new in the world of charity and marketing.
Sattler is the owner of Signing Families, a company dedicated to bringing American Sign Language (ASL) to parents, children, teachers and emergency personnel through seminars, DVDs and free instruction.
She is offering to change her Twitter avatar to a picture of herself wearing a scarf with a company’s logo in exchange for a small donation to charity. It’s a win/win/win situation – marketing exposure for the contributing company, charities benefit, and Sattler gets to help as the conduit. Turning her cancer battle into a good thing is what she calls a “mitzvah,” or a good deed.
After being diagnosed recently with thyroid cancer, Sattler wanted to do something she calls “warm fuzzies” – making people feel good through a good act. She posted her intent on her blog page and already 8 companies have expressed their intent to donate to their chosen charity, with more to come.
She asks that the minimum donation be $18, which in Judaism is the number signifying “Chai” or “Life,” she says. If a company doesn’t have a scarf pre-printed with a logo, she can add the company’s name through a graphic design program. When she is finished with the scarves, she intends to donate them to a local Baltimore-area charity.
She got the idea from Mommy Perks founder Shara Lawrence-Weiss who did something similar in a program she called Twitter Hats. Shara took a picture wearing a hat with a company’s logo and then displayed it on Twitter for her over 10,000 followers to see, in exchange for a donation to any charity the company chose.
Sattler participated in Shara’s program and donated to a favorite charity called Project Nadine, an organization dedicated to deaf literacy and mentorship.
So far, the companies listed on Sattler’s blog that have committed to making a donation include:
