A Quick Guide to Netbooks
November 1, 2008 No Comments
So, do you have your netbook yet? I just spotted an Acer laptop with a solid-state drive on woot.com for less than $300.00.
The netbook craze is sweeping the computer world. It’s has caught the Evil Empire that is Microsoft completely off-guard, and has bought life for XP as a result.
But that’s not the exciting thing about netbooks.
The exciting thing is that the majority of them are being released with Linux! And consumers, most of whom have never run anything but Windows, are picking them up and using them with no problems whatsoever. They don’t even realize that they are running non-Microsoft desktops!
Netbooks are small, ultra-lightweight notebooks. They typically have solid-state (no moving parts) hard drives of eight gigs or so capacity. They also generally come with 512 megs of RAM, plenty to run the Linux operating system they are also typically equipped with. Network-wise, most have both wireless and wired network capability.
They boot up in a few seconds, go straight to a user-friendly desktop, and are preloaded with web, office, and productivity apps.
They are getting cheaper and more powerful each day. There is a Chinese model that may be on sale in the US in time for Christmas that retails for $100.00!
Check out this site that reviews various netbooks available right now.
