3 Fertility Myths Debunked
May 11, 2011 No Comments
According to RESOLVE, the National Infertility Association, close to 7.3 million people in the United States suffer from some form of infertility.
The issue sparks a lot of emotion for people and can lead to myths being perpetuated. Here are three big ones and the truth. Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale University School of Medicine helps separate truth from fiction.
- Only older couples have fertility issues – Some say that fertility issues only hit those 35 and over. Minkin says while age can affect fertility, there are several other symptoms that can contribute such as endometriosis, irregular periods and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. If you are trying to get pregnant and it’s been a year if you are in your 20s or 6 months if you are in your 30s, you should check in with your doctor for an evaluation.
- More sex means better chances – While that might sound like an ok plan for some couples, Minkin suggests if you track your ovulation cycle, you will have better chance for conception. A product like the First Response Digital Ovulation Test can help couples track the best times for their intimacy.
- Once you’re off the pill, you are super fertile – you will be able to get pregnant, but it may take some time for your body to adjust so you may want to wait a bit for your system to go back to its normal state before trying.
It’s easy to feel guilty when things don’t happen right away. It’s also important to remember that 30% of the time, the challenge comes from a condition with the woman and 30% of the time the challenge comes from the man so it’s an equal playing field. The other 40% of the time, no one knows why things are working or it might be that both male and female have a challenge.
